Sumberkima Hill

Sumberkima Hill is a beautiful seaside village located in the West Buleleng Regency of Bali. Somewhere between the jungle and the mountains, you’ll find this lovely community with a luxury Balinese atmosphere, jaw-dropping views, and picturesque villas.

The Villas

It’s more than just a resort. Sumberkima Hill Retreat coexists with local businesses, farms, residences, restaurants, and schools. Inspired by and connected with nature, each villa at Sumberkima Hill Retreat is unique — some with a more traditional Balinese style and others with a modern twist. Each villa, however, will give you the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in paradise.

The villas are divided into sections, all with breathtaking views – a Bali Sea View, a Mountain View, and a Volcano View. You can browse the different villas here.

Villa Felix

I stayed in Villa Felix, a chic one bedroom home with a minimalist and modern design. This beautiful space accommodates up to two guests, and overlooks both the sea and Barat National Park (also known as West Bali National Park). To top it all off, Villa Felix also has a gorgeous community pool with stunning views of the valley.

Eco Initiatives + Sustainability

One of the things that impressed me most about Sumberkima Hill Retreat is its commitment to our planet and sustainability. In 2017, Sumberkima Hill Retreat initiated an NGO called Metamorfosa which works to restore the ecological health of Sumberkima by rehabilitating the coral reefs and reforesting the surrounding hills. Metamorfosa works together with local villagers to develop more sustainable channels of income and build a better future for the Sumberkima community.

If you’re looking for ways to give back during your stay at Sumberkima Hill Retreat, I encourage you to explore one of the below options:

Sponsor A Baby Coral

The coral reef that surrounds Sumberkima’s bay help protect the coastline from storm surges and house many of the local fish. You can help Metamorfosa and the Sumberkima community by sponsoring the coral and their structures in your name or as a tribute to someone you love.

Plant A Tree

The rain helps cover Sumberkima’s lush green mountainscape, but the only way to keep the mountains this way throughout the year is to grow tree cover during dry season. For $10 - $15 you can help support Sumberkima’s local ecosystem by planting either a Banyan Tree or Fruit Tree to attract pollinators and support local wildlife.

Offset Your Carbon Footprint With A Monthly Donation

With a monthly donation you can help offset carbon footprint by planting both trees and corals. Metamorfosa’s Patreon Page allows you to give a monthly donation that will help offset emissions from electricity, supermarket plastics, the production of new clothes and more.

Sumberkima Hill Resort Amenities

Each villa at Sumberkima Hill Retreat is equipped with its own kitchen, living area, and either a private or community pool. Some of the many amenities include:

Community Pool

Sumberkima has two luxurious community pools which can be used by anyone staying at the resort. They are two of the best places on the property to watch the sun set.

A large pristine pool with aqua blue water overlooks the lush green mountsacape.

Wellness + Yoga

Sumberkima Hill Retreat is a haven for rejuvenation. With a panoramic view of the ocean and the valley, you can enjoy a deep yoga practice or refreshing workout session. At the gym you can find yoga mats, blocks, ropes, pillows, TRX straps, weights and more. If you want to book a yoga class there are teachers on site and drop-in classes most available.

Sumberkima Hill Retreat also offers space to host your own yoga retreat and classes on the sand quay by the beach.

The Spa

From flower baths to hot stone massages, you can book all the treatments you need at Sumberkima Hill Retreat. And best of all, the spa boasts some of the most affordable pricing I’ve seen at a resort. Check out the spa menu for yourself below:

Restaurants + Food

Sumberkima Hill Retreat has two restaurants on site with a third in-the-works: Senja Restaurant and Suma Restaurant. Both establishments serve fresh ingredients from Sumberkima’s organic farm, local farmers and fisherman.

Senja Restaurant

Senja delivers traditional Indonesian food with a sunset cocktail menu. Other than the community pools, this is the best place to be to watch sunset with a gorgeous view of the Bali sea.

Suma Restaurant

Suma has a worldly menu and is reminiscent of the many trendy Bali cafes you could find in Canggu or other areas of South Bali. Available for breakfast, lunch and dinner, there are many great western and Asian menu options here like fresh smoothie bowls, fluffy pancakes, pasta, poke bowls, risotto, and wagu burgers. This restaurant faces the sunrise, making it a great spot to enjoy breakfast.

Picnic Or Romantic Dinner

Picnics and romantic dinners are a special event at Sumberkima Hill Retreat. Comfortable cushions, brightly colored rugs, handpicked flowers and moody candles are used to create a cozy atomesphere on the terrace of your villa, on the farm or by poolside. The resort also offers several beautiful dinner locations such as White Sand Beach, on a platform in the middle of the sea, on top of a hill, or in the garden of your villa. Just keep in mind, that this is an outdoor activity and the event may be cancelled if booked on a rainy day.

What To Do In & Around Sumberkima Hill Retreat

There is no shortage of activities at Sumberkima Hill Retreat. From morning yoga sessions to absorbing the magic of Sumberkima's white sand beaches, there's something here for everyone to enjoy. Here are a few of my top recommendations:

Enjoy A Scenic Swim

It’s not everyday that you get to dip into a pool at the edge of a mountain. Sumberkima Hill Retreat’s communal pools overlook coconut groves below and volcanoes above. Both pools have excellent views and are suitable for swimming laps.

Kayak Along The Bay

At Sumberkimall Hill Retreat you can enjoy the clear blue waters of the bay, paddle to the white sand island, wonder through the mangroves by boat or catch the sunset of your dreams. The Bay of Sumberkima has sensational views everywhere you look! But the best way to explore is by boat. When you book a trip through the resort a free shuttle bus will bring you to the Bangsal Harbor, where you’ll find kayaks and the Metamorfosa boat.

Pro Tip: The best time to tour is in the morning when the sea is calm. Make sure to bring shoes to step in the water, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, camera and a dry bag.

Chase Bali’s Most Beautiful Waterfalls

About two hours east of Sumberkima you’ll find some of Bali’s most breathtaking waterfalls. Lesser known to tourists you’ll find smaller crowds here and a better opportunity to take an Instagram-worthy selfie. Here are a few waterfalls and attractions work visiting during your stay in Sumberkima:

Pro Tip: When visiting the waterfalls, although they are techinically free, you will be asked to make a small donation prior to entering.

Banyumala Waterfall

Visit Barak National Park

Barat National Park (West Bali National Park) is full of magic and arguably one of the most prolific wildlife reserves in Bali. The snorkelling and diving around Menjangan Island is magical and bird-watching in the park, fascinating. Here you can find a many deer, monkeys, warthogs, white starlings, and more. The beaches are the best for swimming to the east of West Bali National Park but stunning wildlife can be found anywhere.

Pro Tip: The entry fee for the National Park is 200k, whether you are entering the park on foot or by boat.

Hike Around Sumberkima Hill Retreat

Sumberkima has tons of trails that lead through the jungle and Sumberkima village. You can observe the nuances of the daily lives of locals, from how they gather firewood to what games the children play. Along the way, you can take in the rich landscape of Sumberkima.
